Notes: The Ritchie Vineyard, characterized by its widely spaced, gnarly trunked vines, is a testament to the viticultural fashion of the early '70s. The vineyard’s soil is a gravelly, sandy Goldridge Loam, a remnant of an ancient inland sea, layered over volcanic Tuff rock. The vine rows gracefully slope down from an old volcanic vent that pierces through the sandstone. The vineyard is planted with the Old Wente selection, with a scattering of Musqué selection vines dating back to 1972.
In terms of winemaking, the vineyard is dedicated to the production of Chardonnay. The whole clusters are gently pressed to maintain phenolic delicacy, and the juice undergoes native yeast and full native malolactic fermentation in barrel. This is followed by sur lies bâtonnage, enhancing the wine’s complexity and texture. After aging for 20 months in 20% new François Frères French oak barrels, the Chardonnay is traditionally fined for clarity and texture, and bottled without filtration.
The growing season at the vineyard is typically marked by moderate temperatures, with occasional years of drought leading to careful green drops at veraison. Despite these challenges, the vineyard consistently produces Chardonnay of exceptional quality, with yields varying from average to low depending on the year. The result is a Chardonnay that beautifully expresses the unique terroir of the Ritchie Vineyard.
“Our Ritchie Vineyard Chardonnay walks the fine line between richness & delicacy. It has a complex and harmonious mouthfeel that balances power with elegance.” –David Ramey
