NOTES: Founded in 1981, Lava Cap Winery is a third-generation
family farm in the Sierra Foothills, farming vineyards
between 2,400 and 2,700 feet in elevation. The winery
and estate vineyards sit on a distinctive outcropping of
volcanic soils, the inspiration for the winery’s name. This
combination of elevation and geology produces wines with
remarkable intensity, structure, and freshness.
VINEYARD NOTES: The Estate Syrah grows on a south-facing slope reminiscent
of the hillside vineyards of Hermitage in France’s Northern
Rhône. At 2,600 feet in elevation, cooling mountain breezes
and well-drained soils allow the vines to develop the long,
layered flavors characteristic of great Syrah.
WINEMAKER NOTES: The Estate Syrah opens with aromas of olive tapenade,
violet, prosciutto, and spice. Ripe blackberry, blueberry,
and clove lead into smooth tannins and a long finish. Dark,
savory, and vibrant, this medium-bodied wine shows ample
concentration and depth while retaining the freshness and
acidity needed to age gracefully over the coming decade.
Boldness, richness, and savory complexity, balanced by
natural freshness, have long been hallmarks of Lava Cap’s
Syrah, and this vintage exemplifies them.
